Heartworm Season is Approaching!
A recent survey indicates only 55% of U.S. dog-owning households use heartworm prevention. This is very discouraging since the disease is very prevalent in dogs in our area and it is 100% preventable. Following a simple blood test, all dogs should be placed on some type of prevention. There are several types available that include pills, topical liquids, and injections. Ask your veterinarian to help you choose the best one for your dog.

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, so I often get questions regarding West Nile Virus in dogs as well. Horses and birds are the important hosts of West Nile Virus. This disease is extremely rare in dogs and cats. Reducing the exposure to mosquitoes is a practical way to decrease risk. Some topical products will repel mosquitoes. Reducing standing water in rain gutters or unused flower pots, as well as changing water frequently in bird baths, water bowls, and livestock tanks can keep mosquito eggs from hatching. If you have a pond, the bacteria-releasing disks are fatal to certain mosquito stages but are safe for animals.
